July 2, 1999

Dear Diary,

I have some good news, and some bad news. Let me tell you the bad news first. It's going to be a while before I write to you again. The good news is, well, actually I have a lot of good news. I lost my butterfly neclace but when I told my dad, he pulled it out of his pocket! And he got a new job! He'll be making $14,000 a year! That's all the good news today. Bye.

I'm dying. I'm pretty sure my dad wasn't making $14,000 a year. Cute little me thought that was a lot of money to make in a year! A quick Google search indicates that the average median household income in 1999 was about $60,000. I know we weren't rich, but we were better off than $14,000 a year would provide for.
